The well-known shortcut groups the twelve animals into four trines of three. Animals within the same trine are considered naturally at ease with each other; animals that sit six positions apart on the wheel — such as Rat and Horse, or Ox and Goat — are considered to clash. It is memorable at a party and takes only a birth year, which is exactly why it is the version most people meet first.

The cost of that simplicity is precision. A birth year is one pillar of a Four Pillars chart; the other three — month, day and hour — say more about a person than the year alone. Two people whose animals "clash" can have charts that support each other well, and the reverse is just as true.

The deeper version: Five Element synastry

Synastry compares two full BaZi charts rather than two birth years. It asks two questions: does each person's chart supply elements the other is short of, and how do the two "self" elements — the day stems — relate to each other? A chart that is starved of Wood paired with one that carries plenty of it is read very differently from two charts that are both heavy on the same single element and crowded out the rest.

The deeper reading needs both birth dates and, ideally, birth times, because the hour pillar completes each chart. Without times the comparison still runs on the year, month and day pillars, which is usually enough to be useful and is always more specific than the zodiac shortcut.
